After getting John Abraham for their campaign to create awareness about the suffering of birds, PETA India is approaching Bollywood's most talked-about couple, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, for their help with highlighting the plight of love birds. (Text courtesy: Glamsham.com)
Not only is keeping a bird in a cage cruel, it is also a punishable offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. Even though the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species restricts the trade of foreign birds, a black market involving 300 of the country's estimated 1,200 species of birds thrives openly in many places. Lovebirds are the most commonly sold birds.

This wouldn't be the first time that PETA has worked with the Bachchan clan. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan previously wrote a letter for PETA on behalf of Baixinha, the endangered black rhino who is now thriving at South African's SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary, and Amitabh Bachchan was voted India's ''hottest vegetarian'' three times by PETA supporters.
In a letter to Abhishek and Aishwarya Bachchan, PETA Chief Functionary Anuradha Sawhney writes, ''As India's most famous 'lovebirds', we believe that you are uniquely suited to help bring attention to the plight of these smart and sensitive animals. We would like to arrange a photo shoot with you for a 'Love Birds in Cages' ad to raise awareness of this issue''.
